Good Friday – a report from Jose Zayas

Black Jesus portraitA special Good Friday service was held at St. Martin’s this year. Along with the traditional reading of the passion of Jesus, we had the pleasure to spend time with and hear from guest speakers Flint Taylor, an attorney from the People’s Law Office and Anthony Holmes, one of the torture victims Mr. Taylor represented in the case against Commander Jon Burge of the Chicago Police Department. Also speaking to the congregation that night was Donte L. Thrasher, a graduate student from the University of Chicago who spoke about his life’s journey from Atlanta, Georgia to the Divinity School at U of C. Their stories of modern day injustices and challenges are parallel to the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. They shared their stories to reminded us not to stand on the sidelines, but to get into the fight for social justice. At the close of the evening a special blessing was conferred on those workers who are servants of the community. These community members serve and provide support in the process of healing violence and restoring peace. It was an evening of remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and our modern day experiences that provide us with life lessons in treating each other with respect and love.
